Thought of as one of the key separating factors from all other basketball programs here in Dubai, the NBA Basketball School spends a portion of every practice teaching life skills to the players.  Athletes are given handouts with quotes, asked to write down in their notebooks key messages of the day before practice, and are even asked to participate in important life discussions led by Technical Director, Phil Galvin along with the rest of his staff.

“Not every player in our school will grow up to be a fantastic basketball player, but, every player in our school can grow up to be a fantastic person, if taught properly. We have a unique opportunity every day to instill in all of our athletes, values and life skills that they will take with them wherever they end up in life.” Said coach Katie Batlin.

Our program is filled with amazing young people who demonstrate on a daily basis what it means to be kind, thoughtful, respectful, and open to learning. Phil Galvin does a remarkable job making it a priority to talk with these kids about how they can continue to grow as young people and how they can impact not only their own lives, bot those around them by having a good moral character within them. “At the end of the day, this really isn’t about basketball.  I think it’s great that kid in Dubai wants to become a better shooter, ballhandler, or defender.  But if we aren’t helping them learn the skills they are going to need to navigate the challenges of life in a positive, effective way…then quite frankly, we are not doing our jobs,” expressed Coach Galvin.
